Ed Sheeran - Subtract

For Ed Sheeran’s 2023 album Subtract I had the pleasure of being tasked with creating title animations for the project as a whole, as well as a title graphic for each of the 13 accompanying music videos. It was an exciting collaboration and an interesting challenge to set the mood at the start of each track with a refined and consistent visual. The final results are above, with additional options and process below.

exploration

As I began to explore concepts I was inspired by the more serious, introspective tone of the album, as well as the title itself. I wanted to create something with high contrast and a sense of intensity.

The video above shows potential animated concepts for the main titles and the individual video titles. Some are more refined than others; I wanted to show the breadth of exploration that I covered to find the best fit for this album. I really enjoy this phase of a project where I am creating a wide ranging set of potential executions.
