Leveraging technology to reduce waste,

Savor is a conceptual app that would enable consumers to manage their food consumption more ethically and efficiently.

There are 3 main sections to cover the full life cycle of the user's grocery purchases; the first step is a shopping companion, then an area to manage items in the user's current pantry inventory, and finally a disposal guide.

This platform for food management aims to help the user reduce waste, and educate them at key points on the ethics of their products.

Demonstrations

The videos below show hypothetical user journeys through the app. Each one highlights one of the 3 main sections, and shows some of the additional built in features like the item scanner, or recipe section.

The video above shows the shopping assistant section of the app. First the user selects the Trip Assistant and then creates a new list for their trip. They then populate the list with preselected “essentials,” then add ingredients from a saved recipe and begin their trip. Each item is shown with a score on the side aggregating its overall environmental impact. During the trip they select a better alternative for one of their milk products based on this score, they also use the scanner to add a snack to their cart in the app while they shop. At the end the app offers storage tips for perishable items and gives the user metrics on their shopping habits and trends. Items from the cart are saved in the My Pantry inventory seen in the next video.

This video demonstrates the Pantry section of the app. First the user is sent a notification to use a perishable item logged in their inventory. They then enter their inventory and select the item. The app suggests recipes, and the user filters by ones only containing ingredients already in their inventory. They then save the recipe to the recipe book section of the app - they are offered the chance then to update their inventory, as well as note any modifications or personal comments on the recipe.

This video shows the Sanitation section of the app, included to help users dispose of their products in the most ethical way. In the video the user is prompted with information when they log the last use of an item in their inventory to help them dispose of it properly.
